Cummins
6BT Marine Conversion

 . TO
ORDER THIS KIT OR FOR INFORMATION ON PRICING, AVAILABLITY OR TECHNICAL DATA CALL
The
Dodge Cummins 6BT series is an inline six cylinder diesel built rugged for serious
hard work, and used worldwide in truck, marine and industrial applications. It
is a low RPM, high torque, and a very reliable engine. Even the 160 HP version
produces over 400-ft. lbs of torque. This means your boat can turn a large propeller
at slower engine speeds than with gas power for higher cruising speeds, better
economy, longer engine life, and more power in heavy seas. In marine application,
this engine will weigh approximately 1100 lbs. Need
something different than our standard kit? Our conversion kits can be used in
keel cooled, dry exhaust, and other applications. We can supply necessary parts
for many different applications. Could you use A raw water pump along with the
one for the engine, for bait well etc? Our raw water pump is mounted where the
power steering pump mounts on side of engine, and is gear driven. If you need
a second pump we can mount on front of engine. Tell us what you need, and we will
price out kit to your specs. Are
you tired of paying high prices for marine parts? If any parts are ever needed,
belts, hoses and engine parts can be found at your local discount part stores!Key

READY
TO REPOWER? BEAT
THE HIGH COST OF NEW DIESELS WITH A DODGE CUMMINS CONVERSION! If you can’t
justify the high cost of repowering with new diesels, then it’s time to convert
a truck engine to a marine engine, with our marine conversion kit. Savings of
40% to 50% can be realized over the cost of a new diesel marine engine! Diesel
engines have many advantages as marine power plants, including longer life, better
fuel economy, less maintenance and higher reliability. Since diesel fuel has a
higher flash point than gasoline, it is also a safer fuel to use. Most of the
time, diesel fuel also offers considerable savings at the fuel pump. The Dodge
Cummins 6BT series is an inline six cylinder diesel built rugged for serious hard
work, and used worldwide in truck, marine and industrial applications. It is a
very reliable engine with low RPM and high torque. Even the 160 HP version produces

WOULD
YOU BE INTERESTED IN A COST-EFFICIENT, LIGHT- WEIGHT MARINE DIESEL? The Dodge
Cummins engines 1989-1997 will range from 160 HP to 215 HP in stock application.
The 1989-1993 engines can be brought up to about 200 to 215 HP with adjustments
to injector pump and after-cooler installed. If you need more than 215 HP, this
can be achieved by reworking the injector pump and replacing injectors. You can
also use the 1994-1997 engines with the Big Bosch injector pump, with 160 to 215
HP available from truck depending on year model, HP can be increased. The 1998-2002
24 valve with 235HP out of truck, with more available. The new 2003 dodge truck
engine comes stock with 305hp and we plan to have a kit for this engine in 2006.
When deciding what HP you would like to have, remember the more stock you leave
the engine, the better economy, performance, and reliability you will receive.
This relates to any engine, gas or diesel. We have kits that will increase the
HP on the 1994-1997 engines to 180, 210, 230, 250 +. The 24 Valve engine can also
be increased to over 250 HP. At 250 HP and higher, we recommend an exhaust temperature
pyrometer gauge kit. Under certain conditions such as, exhaust restriction or
too much prop, it is possible the exhaust temperature would rise too high. If
this situation should happen, this kit would let you know so the throttle could
be changed to drop temperature until problem was corrected (this potential problem
relates to any diesel repower application, not just our application). For customers
wanting to use rubber isolator mounts instead of bolting the engine solid, don’t
use just any rubber mounts, use mounts designed to carry the weight, engine torque,
and prop thrust of these engines. There is not any mechanical reason the Dodge
6BT Cummins will not give good results in a marine application. We have some engines
that are going on their fourth year in charter service with no mechanical problems.
Our kits are in boats from 25’ to 35’ a 55’ sailboat in Hawaii and recently a
105' sternwheeler. KIT CONTENTS

ITEMS NEEDED ON ENGINE
When locating an engine from 1989 to 2002 these items listed below need to be
on the engine, as they do not come in the kit: Run solenoid on injector pump
1989-1997 Turbo (see note A in the notes section) Alternator Alternator
bracket Alternator belt tensioner (spring loaded tensioner) Starter (see
#B in note section) Flywheel Flywheel bell housing (see #B in note section)
Water inlet housing Engine wiring harness and engine computer on 1998 to 2002
engines Engine Fan Assembly (It is better to use the front pulley assembly
on truck engine. Just remove fan from assembly. Engines can come with different
diameter crankshaft pulleys, This is why we do not furnish belt in kit, Correct
belt length can be purchased at local part store.

NOTE SECTION
A A water-cooled exhaust turbo housing comes in kit. The truck turbo is
removed from the truck exhaust housing side and installed into water-cooled exhaust
housing provided in kit. With this set up you will have the boost to increase
the HP to the 250-260 HP Range. If you have to have more HP than this we can give
you credit for water-cooled turbo Housing in kit and you can purchase a complete
water cooled turbo assembly for 300HP or higher to have needed boost pressure
for more HP. In trucks through 1999 the turbo installed on the truck was the
model HX35 which will fit the water cooled housing. In 2000-2001 trucks with the
automatic transmission came with a model HY35 turbo and the water cooled turbo
housing does not fit these turbo's. In 2002, trucks with the automatic transmission
went back to the HX35 turbo assembly. A turbo from an engine 1999 and prior will
need to be found if you are planning to use engines with the HY35 turbo. B
Our kit fits the 1994 - 2001 flywheel housing and starter. If customer wants to
use the 1989 - 1993 engine, he will need to locate a starter and flywheel housing
for the 1994 - 2001 engine to put on the earlier engine. Some of the 2002 standard
transmission Flywheel's have a larger clutch surface than the ring gear, this
is easily remedied by taking the flywheel to a machine shop and having it turned
to the same diameter as the ring gear or locating a flywheel for the 98-2001 engine.
C On V-Drive Transmissions the oil drain may need to be relocated. Some
customers have either: gone to a shallow sump oil pan, had the sump modified,
or turned the oil pan with the sump toward the front of the engine (the oil pan
will bolt on either way) when this is done the pick up tube from the screen will
need to be shortened.
REPOWERING TIPS
Below are a few steps that will help you achieve the best performance, reliability,
and satisfaction with a repower application. This relates to any repower application
not just this application. Use transmission rated for your application.
Try to keep engine room temperature within about 30 degrees of outside temp. The
cooler the air going into engine, the better the performance. Prop boat for
max RPM with full load. Check exhaust temperature at rated speed and load.
This will let you know if you are propped right and exhaust size is correct.

Yes,
we do supply H&S with the water cooled manifolds and etc for this conversion,
that being said we do indeed recommend the kit. A little self serving, we
know, but it is a good, relatively inexpensive kit. TO
